Adoption Process & Fees

Thank you for considering opening your home to one of the animals in our care!

You are about to make a very important commitment that will change your life for the next fifteen years or more.    This is not a decision to be made lightly or on impulse.  Please think carefully about how this adoption will affect the lives of yourself and your family before you proceed!

We are the advocates and guardians for the animals in our care and we impose the highest standards for their welfare and happiness.    We seek adoptive homes who share the same philosophy and have the love, time, space and financial resources to properly care for an animal.

All animals are vet-checked, receive basic vaccinations, are micro-chipped or tattooed and spayed or neutered prior to being placed in their adoptive homes.  We assess their behaviour and temperaments in order to determine what would be a suitable home for them.  If you would like to adopt an animal from us, we will advise you what might be the best-suited pet for your home and your lifestyle.

We don’t take chances; we don’t merely give them a chance.  What we want is to give them, with your help, security and love for the rest of their lives.

Please understand that this is a volunteer-run organization.  We try to review applications & get back to everyone as quickly as possible, but at peak times, this may take 2-3 days.  Please be patient with us, as we really do the best we can!

If you would like to apply to adopt a dog or puppy:
1  The first step is to fill out an online adoption application.
2. Next, we will call you to chat, give you more information about the dog(s) you are interested in & learn a little more about your life & home.
3.  If all goes well & we feel that you would be a good match for the dog you are applying for, we will arrange a meeting. We ask that ALL family members and other dogs in the home attend this meeting.  Afterward we ask you to go home to think about things overnight before coming to a final decision.
4.  If, after the meeting, you would like to proceed with the adoption, you would then need to sign our adoption agreement, pay the adoption fee ($250 cash or cheque made out to Pound Rescue) and make arrangements to pick up your new family member!

If you would like to apply to adopt a cat or kitten:
PLEASE NOTE: WE DO NOT ADOPT OUT SINGLE CATS OR KITTENS TO HOMES WITH NO OTHER CATS.  WE FEEL THAT CATS NEED FELINE COMPANIONSHIP IN ORDER TO BE FULFILLED.  WHILE DOGS ARE TAKEN FOR WALKS & HAVE MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO SOCIALIZE WITH OTHER DOGS, CATS ARE KEPT BEHIND WALLS, IN TOTAL ISOLATION FROM THEIR OWN KIND.  WE FEEL THAT THE LEAST WE CAN PROVIDE THEM WITH IS ANOTHER KITTY FRIEND TO SPEND THEIR LIVES WITH.  THE ONLY TIME WE MAKE AN EXCEPTION TO THIS RULE IS IN THE CASE OF AN ADULT CAT WHO REFUSES TO GET ALONG WITH OTHERS, DESPITE OUR EVERY EFFORT TO INTEGRATE THEM.
1.  The first step is to fill out an online adoption application
2.  Next, we will call you to chat further, tell you more about the cat(s) you are interested in and learn more about you & your home.
3.   If all goes well, we will arrange a meeting between you and the cat.   We ask that all persons in the home attend this meeting so we can see how everyone interacts with the cat.   After the meeting, we ask that you go home and think about things overnight before making a final decision.
4.  If you would then like to proceed with the adoption, you will need to sign our adoption agreement, pay the adoption fee and make arrangements to pick up your new kitty.  Adoption fees are $150 for the first kitten, $50 for a second kitten if you are adopting a pair.  Juvenile & adult cats are $75 each or $100 for a pair.  Fees can be paid in cash or by cheque made out to Pound Rescue.

Please note that the adoption fee simply helps us to care for our animals.  In most cases, these fees do not even cover the initial veterinary costs for the animals that we rescue. The adoption fee includes the spay or neuter surgery, tattoo and / or microchip and some vaccinations.

Pound Rescue reserves the right to refuse an adoption to any individual who does not meet our criteria and to keep the reasons for refusal confidential within our organization.
